IWTED 2025 TOKYO

2nd International Workshop on Thermo-electrochemical Devices

Dec. 14th–16th

The University of Tokyo, Japan

Following the great success of the first International Workshop on Thermo-electrochemical Devices (IWTED 2023) in Spain, we are pleased to announce the second IWTED, to be held in Tokyo. This workshop continues to focus on thermo-electrochemical cells, (thermocells), ionic thermoelectrics (i-TE), thermally-regenerative electrochemical cycles (TRECs), or any devices utilizing the temperature effect on electrochemistry. With the rapid growth of this field in all over the world, including Asia, IWTED 2025 aims to exchange cutting-edge research and advancements, accelerate research, and expand international collaborations. We hope many researchers to join this network, share insights, and advance the future of thermo-electrochemical devices.

Transportation

Public transportation

Subway & train are very convenient in Tokyo. You can always find a train departing every 5 minutes.

How to take a train

  1. Get a Suica

  2. Top up your Suica (charge 2,000 JPY, for example, which should be enough for the round trip from the Haneda airport to the University of Tokyo, and taking subways in Tokyo for 2 days)

  3. Touch and Go

Suica is a prepaid card for public transportation in Japan. "Welcome Suica" (the red colored card) is specifically designed for tourists. You can purchase at the airport (either at the vending machine or the service center) and top up the card. There is no expiration or deposit fee. For example, the train fee from Haneda Airport to the University of Tokyo is about 600 JPY. You can use Suica to get a public bus and make a purchase at convenience stores, too!

<Example> Route from the Haneda Airport to the hotel Forest Hongo (Kasuga St.):

The best way is to connect to WiFi at the airport and search for the route on Google Maps. Here are examples to get to the hotel Forest Hongo.

  1. Haneda Airport (Keikyu Line, Airport Express) → Mita St. (change to Mita Line) → Kasuga St. (583 JPY total, about 50 min.)

  2. Haneda Airport (Tokyo Monorail) → Hamamatsu St. (change to JR Yamanote Line) → Yuraku-cho St. (change to Mita Line) → Kasuga St. (843 JPY total, about 50 min.)

How to take a taxi

From the airport, simply follow the sign for "Taxi". In the Haneda Airport Terminal 3 (international), taxis are on the ground floor. Usually, there are plenty of taxis waiting in line, so you do not need to call for them.

Alternatively, you can use the Uber App or the GO Taxi App to call a taxi. In Japan, there are no "Uber drivers," and even if you use the Uber App, a normal taxi will come to pick you up. All the taxis in Tokyo accept credit card payment.

Note: The taxi from the Haneda Airport to the University of Tokyo can cost about 8,000 JPY.

Do I need cash?

The simple answer is NO. You can pay with your credit card at most of the shops and restaurants in Tokyo. (I rarely use cash myself) However, some local restaurants may only accept cash. If you want to try the local Japanese foods, you should have some cash in your pocket!
